Launch of Asia Pacific Glaucoma Guidelines

Launch of Asia Pacific Glaucoma Guidelines at the 19th Congress of Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO), 28 November - 3 December, 2003, Bangkok, Thailand

Speakers

Dr Ivan Goldberg

"Dr Ivan Goldberg, President of the SEAGIG committee: "Eyes in Asia and glaucoma in Asia are different from those in the rest of the world - you can't take information and best practice in the US or Europe and simply apply it here. We also know that there is no 'Asian' eye, that China, Japan, India all present their own unique challenges in terms of glaucoma diagnosis, treatment and management, which makes Asia-specific guidelines event more important. Second only to cataract, glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in our region, and it is the leading cause of preventable blindness."

Dr Prin RojanaPongpun

"A lot of the blindness we're seeing in Asia Pacific can be avoided," said Dr. Prin RojanaPongpun, Chief, Glaucoma Service, Department of Ophthalmology, Chulalongkorn University and Hospital, "Early diagnosis and effective treatment of high IOP can prevent this. Although previous loss of sight cannot be reversed, these guidelines may help doctors preserve patients' remaining eyesight, and play a strong role in reducing blindness caused by glaucoma throughout the region."
